Housing discrimination is illegal. It is unlawful to discriminate in the sale, rental, financing, or showing of housing based on protected characteristics including race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship or immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, military status, sex, age, disability, marital status, status as a victim of domestic violence, lawful source of income, or familial status.
Examples of prohibited conduct may include:
- refusing to rent, sell, or show a property because of a protected characteristic
- quoting a higher price because of a protected characteristic
- steering buyers or renters toward or away from certain neighborhoods based on a protected characteristic
- refusing to rent because a household has children
- refusing to rent based on lawful source of income, including housing assistance or subsidies
- refusing to make appropriate accommodations related to service, assistance, or emotional support animals where required by law
- discriminating based on the preference of a seller or landlord
- refusing to rent to someone because they are a victim of domestic violence
